Having routines in the home help support a child’s need for order. Children feel more comfortable when they know what will happen next each day. Here are three tips for implementing routines at home:
Involve your child in deciding which order activities should come. For example, should getting dressed come before or after eating breakfast?
Post a visual schedule in a prominent place in your home. There are several types of these schedules available online or you can make your own. Look for or make a schedule that can be changed to fit each day’s routine/schedule.
Let your child know when there will be changes. Life happens and sometimes schedules need to be altered. It will be easier for your child if she/he knows in advance what to expect.
