Dr. Montessori created materials that isolate the skill of memorizing math facts.
These materials move from concrete to more abstract until the child no longer requires the material
to remember basic math facts. Students first work on addition, then multiplication, subtraction, and
finally division. When working with your student at home, use manipulative objects to serve as
counters until your child no longer needs them to complete math problems. Try using small crackers
or pieces of cereal, dried beans, stickers, beads, or small toys.
